Village in Ink is an interactive artwork that translates the temporal process of calligraphy
into the spatial logic of architecture. Through generative coding, the installation transforms
Chinese characters into 3D Huizhou-style structures, exploring the deep-rooted
commonalities between calligraphy and architecture in China’s Jiangnan region.
Huizhou is historically renowned for the Four Treasures of the Study (Wenfang Sibao).

This cultural heritage is physically embodied in the region's architecture: the stark white
walls and black tiles serve as a structural mirror to the ink and paper of the scholar’s desk.
In this project, roof tiles function as ink lines outlining a rhythmic skyline, while the
lime-washed walls act as the Xuan paper, creating the essential negative space, or Liubai,
within the composition.
